Silent Thunder

The duo “SILENT THUNDER” from international touring trumpeter and composer Volker Goetze and multi-instrumentalist Christian Torkewitz unites two of the best creative improvisers, who have traveled the world performing with the best world, Jazz and folk musicians from the globe. Together they explore new ground, stretch creative improvisation and build new perspectives defining new forms for improvised music. The original compositions are rooted in European Jazz, West African and Cuban Folklore creating a unique musical experience.

Volker Goetze is a New York-based composer, trumpeter and media artist. He has been investigating the oral culture of West Africa and its influences on black culture in America. Past performances include the Jazz Gallery New York, LA Festival of Sacred Music, Paris Jazz Festival, New Philharmonie Paris and the Munich Opera Festival. Mr. Goetze has held many master classes and was invited as a panelist by the Apollo Theater and the New York Foundation for the Arts.


Firmly rooted in the traditions of Western music and home-based in Modern jazz, Chris Torkewitz took up studies in Cuba at the age of 18. Resettling to NYC in 2007 and being a part of the scene enabled him to merge his prior influences and find his voice. Mr. Torkewitz draws his inspirations from the contemporary NYC jazz scene, Afro-Cuban rhythm culture, and European music traditions. In 2013, he established his NYC-based jazz orchestra and the chamber project ”Vista“ showcasing his large ensemble compositions. Torkewitz shared the stage and recorded with many renowned worldclass artists and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (D.M.A) in performance, composition, and education from Manhattan School of Music.
